The Special Commendation is awarded to an outstanding Canterbury person who has contributed to Canterbury business and the community.

2009 Sir Gil Simpson

Known for his commitment, passion, innovation and determination at both a business level and in the community, our 2009 Special Commendation was awarded to Sir Gil Simpson. A visionary and guru in his field, some would say his innovation and creativity was years ahead of its time.

2008 Sir Tipene O’Regan

The 2008 Champion Canterbury Special Commendation was awarded to Sir Tipene O’Regan an individual who has devoted his life to the pursuit of a goal - a goal for not only himself, but for his people, their children and their children’s children. Renowned for his grit and determination, he helped lead Ngai Tahu through its trials and tribulations of its settlement with the Crown in 1998 and beyond. A company director, Academic & Ngai Tahu Kaumatua.

2007 Sir Miles Warren

Special Commendation was awarded to Sir Miles Warren. An individual who has arguably had more impact on the skyline of our city than any other. This talented Cantabrian’s influence extends far beyond our shores to shape cities throughout the world.

2006 Diana, Lady Isaac

Special Commendation awarded to Diana, Lady Isaac recognised for her work to conservation and the city and her enduring business and community values that have been inseparable from the Isaac name for over 50 years.

2005 Sir Robertson Stewart

Special Commendation awarded to Sir Robertson Stewart for outstanding business success, a prominent philanthropist, an effective community leader and a highly regarded sportsperson.

2004 Gerald and Jill Westenra
